Project Overview: South Tarawa Renewable Energy Project (STREP)
The South Tarawa Renewable Energy Project (STREP) is being implemented by the Government of Kiribati with support from the Asian Development Bank (ADB) and other co-financers. It is the first ADB project in Kiribati’s energy sector.
STREP aims to strengthen Kiribati’s renewable energy capacity through the installation of solar photovoltaic (PV) generation systems, a battery energy storage system (BESS), and institutional capacity building initiatives. The project also focuses on developing an inclusive and gender-sensitive renewable energy enabling framework while addressing barriers to private sector investment.
Specific Deliverables:
- Installation:
- 4.0 MW / 5.0 MWp ground-mounted solar photovoltaic (PV) capacity
- 5.0 MW / 13 MWh battery energy storage system (BESS)
- Policy and Legal Development:
- Develop a gender-sensitive draft Energy Act that:
- Establishes clear energy sector institutional responsibilities
- Modernizes existing laws
- Enhances renewable energy deployment and energy efficiency
- Improves regulations and encourages private sector investments
- Reforms tariffs to promote sustainability
- Develop a gender-sensitive draft Energy Act that:
- Institutional Capacity Building:
- Strengthen stakeholder skills in:
- Project management and supervision
- Operation and maintenance of renewable energy generation assets
- Strengthen stakeholder skills in:
This project marks a major milestone in Kiribati’s journey toward a more sustainable, resilient, and inclusive energy future.
