CLIMATE INVESTMENT FUND

The Climate Investment Fund (CIF) is one of the key multilateral climate finance mechanisms that Kiribati accesses through its Ministry of Finance and Economic Development (MFED). The CIF supports the country's efforts to build resilience against climate change impacts, such as sea-level rise and extreme weather events.

To coordinate and manage climate finance initiatives, MFED established the Climate Finance Division (CFD), which serves as the national focal point for the CIF, as well as the Green Climate Fund (GCF) and the Adaptation Fund. The CFD is responsible for facilitating access to these funds, aligning them with national development priorities, and ensuring effective implementation of climate-related projects.

In 2024, Kiribati launched its National Climate Financing Strategy (KNCFS) to enhance the country's capacity to mobilize and manage international climate finance. The strategy aims to strengthen institutional frameworks, improve coordination among stakeholders, and prioritize investments in areas such as coastal protection, renewable energy, and food security.

Through these efforts, the MFED seeks to ensure that climate finance, including resources from the CIF, effectively supports Kiribati's sustainable development and resilience-building goals.
