Development Vision

The development of Kiritimati Island is a central pillar of the Kiribati 20-Year Vision (KV20), which emphasizes fisheries and sustainable tourism as key productive sectors for driving economic growth.

A critical component of this vision is the rehabilitation of Kiritimati’s key transport infrastructure — including the airport, seaports, and the main island road. These investments are essential for:

• Boosting eco-tourism,
• Supporting domestic and international flights,
• Strengthening the fishing industry, and
• Facilitating trade and logistics.

These priorities clearly highlight the need for targeted and coordinated development interventions to realize the broader goals of the KV20, both at the national level and specifically for Kiritimati Island.
