KIRIBATI NATIONAL FOOD SUBMIT 10-12 February 2010
The Kiribati National Food Summit, held from 10–12 February 2010, convened national stakeholders to address the country's pressing food security challenges. Organized in the context of increasing reliance on imported foods, declining local agricultural production, and the impacts of climate change, the summit aimed to develop a coordinated national response to ensure sustainable food systems.
Objectives:
- Assess the current state of food security in Kiribati, identifying key vulnerabilities and challenges.
- Foster collaboration among government agencies, civil society, and development partners to formulate integrated strategies for food security.
- Develop actionable plans to enhance local food production, improve nutrition, and build resilience against climate-related impacts.
MFED's Role:
The Ministry of Finance and Economic Development (MFED) played a pivotal role in aligning the summit's outcomes with national development priorities. By coordinating resource allocation and integrating food security initiatives into the national budget and development plans, MFED ensured that the strategies formulated during the summit were financially sustainable and effectively implemented.
The summit's outcomes contributed to the formulation of subsequent policies and programs aimed at strengthening Kiribati's food systems, promoting sustainable agriculture, and enhancing the nation's resilience to food insecurity.
